What is the MBSR?
The MBSR is an evidence-based stress-reduction program that was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.
Having been widely researched over the last 35 years, the MBSR has been scientifically proven to help with a range of physical and psychological difficulties including anxiety, depression, and chronic pain:
“Our work over the past thirty-five years has shown consistent, reliable, and reproducible demonstrations of major and clinically relevant reductions in medical and psychological symptoms across a wide range of medical diagnoses, including many different chronic pain conditions, other medical diagnoses and in medical patients with a secondary diagnosis of anxiety and/or panic, over the eight weeks of the MBSR intervention, and maintenance of these changes in some cases for up to four years of follow-up.”
Centre for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society
It is important to note that the MBSR has been designed to complement, not replace, traditional medical and psychological treatments.

UNPLUG and RECONNECT to your most powerful self on one of our nurturing women-only retreats.
RELEASE OF USUAL RESPONSIBILITIES. Surprisingly, home is sometimes the hardest place to relax in. There are always jobs to be done and something calling for outward attention. To consciously sit and simply be in your home environment requires deliberate choice, as in a formal meditation practice. That usually only goes for an hour or so though, and then there are all the other hours that ask for input, energy, etc. So it can be hard to really ‘let go’ in the home environment.·
THE LUXURY OF PERSONAL QUIET TIME to listen, walk, and soak up the natural world. The lilies of the field toil not, as it says somewhere in the Bible. To just breathe in the air outside in a natural setting is enlivening, and calls forth a new alertness in all our senses as we slow down our pace to just absorb… breathe in, breathe out, and be part of the natural world.·
THE PLEASURE OF BEING WITH OTHERS in structured and non-structured ways, to share in good conversation, to contemplate together how we are in our day-to-day lives, and build a new community with other women. Soooo satisfying.·
UNPLUG AND PUT THAT PHONE AWAY! Many current studies are highlighting how the relentless nature of our busy switched-on world profoundly (and detrimentally) affects our nervous system, building unseen stress and anxiousness without realising it. So retreat is a good opportunity to switch off the phone (if you’re brave enough), or at least put it away for large portions of the day, and notice how it feels to let go of that constant stream of input that news and social media bring. Free up the space to free up your own growth.
NOURISH AND UNWIND. With food cooked for you, the program all sorted out with yoga and meditation sessions (optional), creative contemplation time, and ample free time to just be, it doesn’t take long for the nervous system to relax its vigilance some, to soften and give back some sweet new energy.
It’s strange to think that we will provide ‘maintenance’ for our cars on a regular basis, and yet we often just continue on in our lives without much thought to the impact of day-to-day living and how it can quietly and surreptitiously create stress in various ways – mentally, emotionally, and definitely physically.
The retreat was such a worthwhile experience, and I’ve already recommended to friends to keep their eyes out for the next one.
Anne and Cherise compliment each other beautifully throughout their program, which is the perfect balance of nourishishing restorative yoga, mindful meditations, reflection, connection with others, delicious food and time for personal recharge in a spectacular coastal setting.
